Annual Students’ Art Show at Marlborough Arts Center

In March the Marlborough Arts Center is once again hosting the Annual Students’ Art Show of students from Marlborough, Hebron, Gilead, and Andover. This show is coordinated by Susan Hollister and Linn Gotta, collaborating closely with the Art teachers of all the schools. In the Elementary schools the teachers are: Denise Ketterer in Marlborough; Meredith Cowan in Hebron; Sue Hourihan in Gilead; and Jay Ames in Andover. Brian Merrill and Rebecca Keller are in RHAM Middle School; Ken Giella, Bev Fisher, Shelly Osowiecki, and Carrie Dinunzio are at RHAM High School. These talented teachers stimulate their students’ creativity in myriad ways so that every Show is unique and always impressive. It is worth a visit even if you do not have a student exhibiting in the Show.

Because there are so many schools involved, there will be two Opening Receptions for the young artists, their parents and friends, and for the public. Saturday, March 7, from 1-4 p.m., will be the Reception for Marlborough Elementary School and both RHAM Middle and High Schools. Sunday, March 8, will be the Reception for the elementary schools of Gilead, Hebron, and Andover.

After the Opening Receptions, the Show will continue and be open on weekends through March 22, every Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Admission is free.

The Marlborough Arts Center is a non-profit regional center for the fine arts, performing arts, and fine crafts that is located at 231 North Main Street, Marlborough, CT . Ample parking is also free and the building is fully accessible. Details about this and other artistic endeavors, classes, and membership can be viewed on line at www.marlborougharts.org or call (860) 295-9389.

4th Friday @ the Arts Cafe on February 27th

There may be snow outside, but there’s blue grass inside the Marlborough Arts Center at 231 North Main Street in Marlborough, CT when “Grass Routes” plays for the 4th Friday @ the Arts Cafe on Friday, February 27, 2015. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., but doors open at 7:00 with time to peruse the art works on exhibit as well as the fine crafts for sale in the Gift Shop.

Although known as bluegrass players, the “Grass Routes” also play folk and country and are a delightful and personable five-member group with Bill Reveley, Marilyn Toback-Reveley, Dave Orlomski, Joe Lemeris, and Tim St. Jean playing multiple instruments including mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo, and upright bass. Unique to this group that has been together for over 20 years is that each member sings lead, so their harmonies change with each song and promise a night to remember in the beautiful Charles W. Hall Art Gallery. This is a real gift for all bluegrass lovers, and an unexpected pleasure for those who may not be familiar with the group.

Admission at the door is $10/person. BYO Wine, with other refreshments available.

President Joan C. Lester’s Letter for February 2015

In this the shortest month of the year, my message will also be short, unlike the six more weeks of winter predicted by Punxsutawney Phil and this state’s Chuckles. New England winters can certainly test our strength of character, flexibility, and frustration levels, can’t they? But Spring in all its promise of new life will surely follow and then we’ll have summer heat and humidity to test our spirits.

Whatever the weather, our 4th Friday @ the Arts Cafe will continue with the return of an evening of bluegrass pleasure with “Grass Routes” on Friday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m. with admission at the door of $10/person. Doors open at 7:00 so you can browse the art works and fine crafts in the Gift Shop that are all for sale.

Although known as bluegrass players, the Grass Routes also play folk and country and are a delightful and personable five-member group with Bill Reveley, Marilyn Toback-Reveley, Dave Orlomski, Joe Lemeris, and Tim St. Jean playing multiple instruments including mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo, and upright bass. Unique to this group that has been together for over 20 years is that each member sings lead, so their harmonies change with each song and promise a night to remember in our beautiful Charles W. Hall Art Gallery. This is a real gift for all you bluegrass lovers, and an unexpected pleasure for those of you who may not be familiar with the group.

And in the middle of the month there is Valentine’s Day. The myths surrounding this day and its patron saint, of which there were at least three Valentines, may be apocryphal but celebrating love and friendship is real. May you each and all enjoy the presence, and memories, of loved ones on February 14 and every other day too.

Stay warm and safe and we hope to see you at MAC soon, and often.

Joan
